2. What are my options for pain control during childbirth?
If you are interested in pain control, tell your nurse. You will be able to receive an epidural, a type of spinal anesthesia, when the doctor says it is time. It is important for the doctor to have input on when to give the epidural so that it is not given too early. If given too early, the epidural will wear off before the birth process is completed.

3. Can the baby's father go with the baby to the nursery immediately after delivery?

Generally, we do allow fathers to go with the baby to the nursery to learn the birth weight and length. If the baby needs more procedures to ensure his/her health, we might ask the father to wait, so we can provide our full attention to the health of your baby.

5. How long will my baby be in the Newborn Nursery before coming to my room?

Generally, we keep the baby in the Newborn Nursery for four hours. This gives you time to bath and the staff time to fully examine the baby. Also, we are able to observe the baby's body temperature so your baby does not become too cold and then ill, which is common among newborns.

7. Can my other children visit me in the labor and delivery area?

8. What type of measures does Floyd Medical Center use to ensure my baby's safety?

We take several measures to ensure the safety of your newborn. We carefully place armbands on the mom, dad and baby, which have the same identification number. The nurse will check the armbands to make sure they all match when he/she brings you your baby.

Your baby will have a special security sensor that will alarm if the baby is taken too close to an outside doorway or elevator.

All of the staff caring for you and your baby will have a Floyd photo identification badge. If you see anyone who does not have a Floyd photo identification badge in your room, please alert your nurse at once by using the call button. You have the right to ask for proper identification before giving your baby to anyone not wearing a Floyd photo identification badge.

9. The baby's father and I have different last names. I want the baby to have his last name. How can I do this legally?

If you are not legally married to the father, but would like for the newborn to receive the father's last name and the father placed on the birth certificate you must complete a Paternity Acknowledgement form. This legal document is required by the State of Georgia. The father may complete the appropriate paperwork at the Floyd Medical Center's Birth Certificate Clerk Office. The office is open at Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

10. Will you take my newborn's picture?

Our staff and volunteers will visit your room to get permission to take your baby's picture. Floyd Medical Center has an agreement with First Foto to process your newborn photos for you to purchase and to post on the Floyd Medical Center Web site. Parents must choose whether to have their baby's picture placed on our online Web Nursery on this Web site.
